Fighting heavy traffic and air pollution with wireless technology
Driving in a way that is environmentally friendly with an app in your car that displays your CO2 emissions during the journey – how does it work?
Kemal Ayyildiz: By combining information technology, mobile communications services and satellite positioning. In this way we can already measure the level of carbon dioxide emitted during the journey, without the need for complex integration in the car electronics or for special probe retrofits.

Telekom tested such a solution in cooperation with GTZ as part of Expo2010 in Beijing and Shanghai. How did the pilot project go?
Kemal Ayyildiz: It was very promising: During the Expo in Shanghai, we presented, together with GTZ, the Pay-as-you-Pollute project. The project involved ascertaining the actual level of CO2 emitted by the fair vehicles in order to create the basis for an emissions payment system. To do this, smartphones with a special app were used in a fleet of VIP shuttle vehicles. The software program determined various drive parameters and route profiles for the journeys completed. Combined with consumption data from the vehicle manufacturer, CO2 emissions around the fairground and on the routes connecting EXPO with the two airports in Shanghai were calculated in real time.
